What is CBD?
The Preventive Vet explains that CBD is safe for our animals and there are many benefits for dogs with anxiety and seniors, “CBD is derived from either hemp (the rope and fabric stuff) or cannabis (usually the recreational stuff).CBD Oil for Pets:

How do Phytocannabinoids Work?
All animals have an endocannabinoid system that assists in maintaining the physiological, neurological and immunological systems of the body. If there is a deficiency of endocannabinoid production, the system’s multiple receptors will utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids to help create balance and provide support for relaxing, repairing or restoring. Naturally occurring phytocannabinoids are important for the overall health of dogs, cats, humans, rabbits and all animals. At all three of our stores, we sell CBD oil for pets that can be given orally and also as treats. A Q&A with Holistic Hound:
We are so excited to share the following Q&A with you – Holistic Hound was started by Heidi Hill in 2003 in Berkeley, California and is a blend of her two passions: animals and holistic healthcare. Our stores carry CBD oil for pets and treats designed by Heidi and her team. We asked her a few questions about her company and the products we carry.
Q. Why did you create CBD oil for pets?
I started selling CBD treats about 4 years ago. We were the first in our area to have them. Our customers were very curious and open to trying and the feedback we received was phenomenal. I had always wanted to have a product of our own, to complement the store – something focused on health and wellness. I decided early on to try to formulate something even better than what we were selling and immersed myself in research – of the ingredients, manufacturing, etc. to develop a high-quality product that we could really stand behind.
Q. Any studies and research on CBD?
There are a couple of books I highly recommend – Cannabis and CBD Science for Dog by Caroline Coile, Ph.D. and Medical Marijuana & Your Pet by Robert Silver, DVM. There are links to many more websites and articles worth reading on our website at https://holistichound.com/blog.
Q. As far as safety goes, what should our customers know?
Our products contain zero THC so there are no psychoactive effects. In addition, our products are third-party tested for potency, residual solvents and pesticides so you are confident you are getting a safe and effective product. Our recommended serving size is conservative and we have had great results; however, you can safely increase the dose incrementally to get the desired effect (reduce anxiety, inflammation, pain, etc.).
Q. Do you want to talk about what makes your CBD oil for pets different?
There are a few very key differentiators of our products is that they contain a blend of five certified organic medicinal mushrooms: Reishi, Shiitake, Mesima, Poria and Turkey Tail. In addition, our treats contain either pasture raised chicken or grass-fed lamb liver which makes them considerably more palatable. They are also grain, GMO and gluten free. It’s also important to know that our oil is derived from the whole plant and is a full spectrum oil that includes other beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that provide what’s known as the “entourage effect.” In our opinion, the benefits of full-spectrum products are much greater than “isolates” which are much less expensive and can only provide the effects of the single compound that has been extracted or isolated.Being an independent pet retailer for over 14 years, I bring a unique perspective and understanding of our business as well as having a strong background in, and focus on, health and wellness. We do not sell to big box stores and have a MAP policy to keep the playing field level and fair.
Q. Can you please expand on the benefits of these mushrooms?
Medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years as an analgesic, anti-viral and antibiotic. They provide considerable immune support and modulation, helping to balance an over or under functioning immune system. In addition, mushrooms are a powerful antioxidant, reduce allergic responses and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They are also known to have anti-tumor properties.
