Top Veggies for Dogs: How to Choose

At Salty’s we’re celebrating National Fresh Veggie Day on June 16. And when it comes to canines you don’t typically have to wrestle them to eat their veggies. You can choose what to include with meals based on what veggies are in season and those that aren’t that pricey. Look for veggies that are locally grown when you can. We carry a lot of veggie supplements that can be added as a topper to kibble, raw or any dehydrated diet.”Thank you, Jen, at Salty’s for helping me with Max the 13yr old Wonder Chi. I brought him home 3 months ago and can’t figure out his tummy. We’ve landed on chicken and rice, but needed to supplement it. Thanks to my food guru’s- we tried Green JuJu and I think we may have solved his tummy!! You guys ROCK! Max and I thank you,” according to one of our customers. With this in mind, consider some veggie mix recipes this summer when you’re preparing meals. And rotating these each week will let you know which veggies your dogs enjoy the most. According to Dr. Karen Becker’s fourth edition of “Real Food for Healthy Dogs and Cats”, veggie possibilities include asparagus, beet root, greens and broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chard, chicory, collards, cucumbers, kohlrabi, eggplant, lettuce (all types except iceberg), mushrooms, parsnips, parsley, peas of any type, peppers, rutabaga, spinach, squash/pumpkin, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips and yams! She doesn’t recommend corn.ParkerThis is a long list to choose from! The more color the better as there is more vitamin A in red peppers vs. green peppers for example.

Serving them is easy!

Tips from our staff:

  1. Cut them up and puree them in a food processor
  2. And you can rotate frozen with fresh! Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to hit up the farmer’s market this week.
  3. NOTE: sweet potatoes, yams and winter squash should be cooked
  4. Always leave out onions and raisins
  5. Don’t feed broccoli every day due to the iodine uptake (rotate!)

Cucumbers can be a great summer treat! Freeze them on a hot day and then serve to your dogs. Our sister store has loads of gardening tips too if you want to try planting some of these veggies on your own this summer. You still have time for tomatoes! Stop by Fang!
